Reconstructing Complex Surfaces from Multiple Stereo Views

چکیده

We present a framework for 3-D surface reconstruction that can be used to model fully 3-D scenes from an arbitrary number of stereo views taken from vastly different viewpoints. This is a key step toward producing 3-D world-descriptions of complex scenes using stereo and is a very challenging problem: real-world scenes tend to contain many 3-D objects, they do not usually conform to the 2-1/2-D assumption made by traditional algorithms, and one cannot take it for granted that the computed 3-D points can easily be clustered into separate groups. Furthermore, stereo data is often incomplete and sometimes erroneous, which makes the problem even more difficult. By combining a particle-based representation, robust fitting, and optimization of an image-based objective function, we have been able to reconstruct surfaces without any a priori knowledge of their topology and in spite of the noisiness of the stereo data. Our current implementation goes through three steps—initializing a set of particles from the input 3-D data, optimizing their location, and finally grouping them into global surfaces. Using several complex scenes containing multiple objects, we demonstrate its competence and ability to merge information and thus to go beyond what can be done with conventional stereo alone.

Multiple View Object Cosegmentation Using Appearance and Stereo Cues

We present an automatic approach to segment an object in calibrated images acquired from multiple viewpoints. Our system starts with a new piecewise planar layer-based stereo algorithm that estimates a dense depth map that consists of a set of 3D planar surfaces. The algorithm is formulated using an energy minimization framework that combines stereo and appearance cues, where for each surface, ...

3D Reconstruction and Restoration Monitoring of Sculptural Artworks by a Multi-Sensor Framework

Nowadays, optical sensors are used to digitize sculptural artworks by exploiting various contactless technologies. Cultural Heritage applications may concern 3D reconstructions of sculptural shapes distinguished by small details distributed over large surfaces. These applications require robust multi-view procedures based on aligning several high resolution 3D measurements. In this paper, the i...

Reconstructing Surfaces from Unstructured 3D Points

Most active and passive range nding techniques yield unstructured and generally noisy 3D points. In order to build useful world representations , one must be able to remove spurious data points and group the remaining into meaningful surfaces. In this paper, we propose an approach based on tting local surfaces. Diierential properties of these surfaces are rst used iteratively to smooth the poin...

PatchMatch Stereo - Stereo Matching with Slanted Support Windows

Common local stereo methods match support windows at integer-valued disparities. The implicit assumption that pixels within the support region have constant disparity does not hold for slanted surfaces and leads to a bias towards reconstructing frontoparallel surfaces. This work overcomes this bias by estimating an individual 3D plane at each pixel onto which the support region is projected. Th...

Key characteristics of specular stereo.

Because specular reflection is view-dependent, shiny surfaces behave radically differently from matte, textured surfaces when viewed with two eyes. As a result, specular reflections pose substantial problems for binocular stereopsis. Here we use a combination of computer graphics and geometrical analysis to characterize the key respects in which specular stereo differs from standard stereo, to ...
